30 Years of Ldo | Widespread Exhibition

29 POSTER, 29 STOREFRONTS

A WHOLE CITY TELLS ITS STORY

After the preview at iMorticelli, Linea d’Ombra takes its image outside the theatre: posters from past editions now live in businesses friendly to the festival, between Salerno and its province. Each window display has become a fragment of what we have been, with an invitation to look to the future and dream of what we will be.

An image is an image; translating it into words partly betrays its meaning. It must be able to flow through channels other than those of the “representation of an idea”; it must act as a door, a threshold to be crossed in order to be guided by the emotion of open meaning. In this widespread exhibition, there is also the image of our growing city, which is now, perhaps, searching and questioning itself once again, and us with it.

PEPPE D’ANTONIO, CREATOR AND FOUNDER OF THE LINEA D’OMBRA FESTIVAL, EXPLAINS ITS MEANING TO US:

For me, from 1996 to 2006, the festival began with a meeting with Gelsomino D’Ambrosio, an artist, graphic designer and refined intellectual of international standing. It was our seemingly casual chats – on the street or in front of a bar in the centre of Salerno – that shaped my ideas for the edition. It often happened that only after seeing the graphic result of these meetings did I understand the direction I wanted the Linea d’Ombra Festival to take. In doing so, D’Ambrosio drew on his immense knowledge of painting and much more. His posters were/are a harmonious blend of knowledge, visual cultures and artistic references that helped to give depth to our project. After Gelsomino’s death, the collaboration with the Segno Associati studio continued until 2010 thanks to the commitment of his friend and partner Pino Grimaldi, with the collaboration of Arturo Barbarisi.

From 2011 to 2014, Dario Volpe of Lettera 7 revamped the graphic design, imagining other scenarios and cultural references, while remaining faithful to the idea that the festival always wanted to be a glimpse into the future, or at least leave a trail to get there.

Since 2015, we have been working with Roberto Policastro of Doppiavù to define the visual identity of the festival, which is always a collective effort, a bottom-up production process, and therefore one in which the artistic direction listens carefully. With him, we continue to discuss the idea, the theme, and the words that must become images, knowing that we never wanted – and never accepted – a purely didactic, illustrative product.
