Reserved and talented, at only 20 she is chosen by Nanni Moretti for the film La stanza del figlio, for which she receives numerous awards as best emerging talent. The film commitment does not prevent her from continuing her studies: she graduates from classical high school with full marks and enrolls in the degree course in Archeology.
Her next film is La meglio gioventù (2003), which earned her the Nastro d’Argento 2004 for Best Actress in a Leading Role along with the film’s female cast. In 2005 another important film Romanzo criminale, arrives, directed by Michele Placido. In the same year she is the protagonist, together with Silvio Muccino, in Manuale d’amore, by Giovanni Veronesi.
In 2006 she plays the role of a young director in the film Il caimano, directed by Nanni Moretti. In September 2007 she takes part in the film Piano, solo (directed by Riccardo Milani, with Kim Rossi Stuart, Michele Placido and Paola Cortellesi).
The consecration comes in 2009 with the film Il grande sogno, directed by Michele Placido, with which she wins the award for Best emerging actress at the Venice Film Festival.
2013 is a year of great recognition: she is the protagonist of Valeria Golino’s debut feature, Miele, and of Un giorno devi andare by Giorgio Diritti, in competition at the Sundance Film Festival.
In 2017 in Cannes she receives, for her interpretation in Sergio Castellitto’s Fortunata, the award for best actress. The following year she plays Ilaria Cucchi in the film Sulla mia pelle, presented during the 75th Venice International Film Festival.
In 2020 she was awarded as Best Actress for La dea fortuna, a film by Ferzan Ozpetek, with Edoardo Leo and Stefano Accorsi. In the same year she makes her debut as a director at the Venice Film Festival, with the short film “BMM-Being My Mom”, dedicated to the relationship with her mother who died when she was in her early thirties and when she had become the mother of little Elsa in turn.
