Director and screenwriter, he begins his career in 1991, co-writing the film Condominio by Felice Farina. In 1994, with La bella vita he inaugurated the happy and lasting partnership with Paolo Virzì for which, together with Furio Scarpelli and Francesco Piccolo, he writes numerous screenplays: Ferie d’agosto (1996), Ovosodo (1997), Kisses and embraces (1999), My Name is Tanino (2001), Caterina goes to town (2003), N – Io e Napoleone (2006), Tutta la vita davanti (2008) and La prima cosa bella (2010).
With the director Mimmo Calopresti he writes the screenplays for: La seconda volta (1995, with Nanni Moretti), La parola amore esiste (1998, with Gérard Depardieu), Preferisco il rumore del mare (2000) and La felicità non costa niente (2003) .
He also collaborates with Franco Bernini (subject and screenplay of the film Sotto la luna), David Riondino (Cuba libre – Velocipedi ai tropici), Francesca Comencini (Le parole di mio padre), with the comedians Ficarra and Picone (Nati stanchi, Il 7 e 8, La Matassa) and with Nina Di Majo (Matrimoni ed altri disastri)
Also known in the world of television, he takes care of the adaptation of Andrea Camilleri’s novels for the TV series Il Commissario Montalbano (1998 – 2008) and those of Carlo Lucarelli for Il Commissario De Luca (2008).
From 2000 to 2010 he is also a screenwriting teacher at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia.
In 2011 he makes his directorial debut with the film Scialla! (stai sereno), with important awards: the “Controcampo” award for narrative feature films at the Venice Film Festival, to the Davide di Donatello and the Nastro d’Argento for Best New Director. Subsequently he directs the films Noi 4 (2014) and Tutto quello che vuoi (2017). In 2020 he is back behind the camera for his fourth directorial work Cosa sarà, which will be released in theaters on 29 October.
