Towards the end of the 15th century, accused of killing Count Franz, Adele Karnstein is burned at the stake. Lisabeth, her daughter, is raised at the castle and, having grown up, she is forced to marry Count Kurt, the evil author of the murder. The curses announced by the unfortunate Adele come true: the plague rages and Count Humboldt, Kurt’s father, dies from the sudden appearance of a stranger, in whom he recognizes Mary, Adele’s firstborn daughter whom he has seduced and killed years earlier. Kurt becomes inflamed with a sudden love for the stranger and decides, together with her, to kill Lisabeth. However, the woman’s body disappears, while everyone in the castle continue talking about it as if it were a living person. This leads Kurt, who feels persecuted by a ghost, first to terror and then to madness. In the crypt of the castle he discovers the truth: Lisabeth is alive while Mary is the ghost of her sister who came to take revenge in the name of her unjustly killed mother.
