The film ‘L’Odissea’ was released in 1911, a few months after the great success of ‘L’Inferno’, shot by the same three pioneers (De Liguoro, Bertolini and Padovan). Like its predecessor, it follows the plot of the poem in a “tableau” structure, where each scene represents, as in a tableau vivant, an event from the poem. What may seem to us today to be a slavish adaptation was at the time a crazy undertaking, which took cinema from the status of scientific experiment to work of art. I was inspired by this tableau vivant structure when composing the music, taking advantage of such a clear structure. I will play with this clear temporal scan, sometimes following it, sometimes contrasting it. I would add that it is a real pleasure to rediscover this naive and free moment in the history of cinema, a unique and still very fascinating phase.
