Linea d'Ombra Festival accepts its challenge to change!
In recent years, we have felt an increasing need to reflect on a radically changing world, inside and outside the cinema. The concept of Linea d’Ombra Festival 2023, Cha(lle)nge, is an invitation to take an active role, to adopt positive practices that can effectively intervene in reality.
For this reason, we accepted the challenge of the AFIC (Association of Italian Film Festivals): to take concrete actions attentive to environmental sustainability in compliance with the national Green Festival guidelines they drafted.
The initiatives supported to this end are summarised in the 9 points listed below.
The venues of the XXVIII edition of Linea d’Ombra are located in the heart of Salerno’s historic centre, within walking distance of each other. The strategic location of the festival venues favours the use of public transport, encouraging sustainable mobility choices (walking, cycling, public transport, participating in car sharing or car pooling services) and thus helping to reduce environmental pollution caused by the use of private vehicles.
In order to facilitate sustainable travel, a dedicated page has been designed and published on our website and social channels, indicating the walking routes and bus lines that can be used to reach the locations, information sites to refer to for useful train and bus timetables, and a Google Maps reference map to make it easier to find the locations.

In order to combat paper waste, the amount of printed materials was significantly reduced compared to previous editions. The promotional campaign was mainly conducted via the web, favouring the use of the digital format for programme consultation, booking events without printing tickets, and favouring social communication campaigns (at the expense of printed posters and flyers). Furthermore, LDO staff has always favoured the use of digital storage systems (Google Drive) and instant messaging for the exchange of internal documentation.
The Festival has always used furnishings made of recycled cardboard (desks, chairs, shelves). From this edition, some of the furnishings are made without any reference to the visual identity of the current edition, facilitating their reuse in future editions.
Differentiated waste collection will take place during the festival. In order to ensure the correct sorting of waste, staff, audience and guests will be invited to download the Junker app containing the City of Salerno’s waste sorting instructions onto their mobile devices.
The gadgets produced are made without any reference to the visual identity of the current edition in order to be able to reuse them in future years and limit waste. The members of the popular jury are invited to return the badge-holder lanyard at the end of the festival in order to avoid its dispersion in the environment and to allow it to be reused.
Guest accommodation and participating restaurants are located no more than 2 km away from the festival locations and are easily accessible on foot, by bicycle or public transport.
The contracted restaurants used by staff and guests are attentive to the seasonality and territoriality of the products offered, opting for local and organic wines and foods.
Draught water dispensers will be installed in the locations to reduce the use of plastic bottles and glasses and encourage the use of personal water bottles.
Environmental culture and social sustainability
Cinematographic language represents a powerful means of communication, functional in spreading and promoting awareness of ecological and social issues. This year the festival dedicates the entire section Paths of the gaze: film school to the green transition, with screenings and meetings on green themes aimed at teachers and students of secondary education institutions. Each screening is introduced by experts and/or witnesses of the current debate on climate emergencies and the need for an intelligent ecological transition
